History of the RecCenter former Armory.

The Kankakee Valley Rec Center is Kankakee County’s newest sports facility. The facility is a 1921 renovated monument. It will host many spectator sporting events and bring additional revenue for Kankakee County. The Armory was built in the 1920’s and used by the Kankakee National Guard. The original footprint of the building included barracks for the servicemen, a shooting range, training center and storage for their military weapons. In 2012, the Kankakee Valley Park District purchased the building for $25,000 and then used a $2.5 million grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for renovations. After a year of renovations, the former Armory, now called the KVPD Rec Center houses the Recreation Department staff, a 2 court gymnasium that seats 700, 2 classrooms and a 150 person banquet room. The renovations were approved by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency in order to keep the history of the building alive for future guests. The original brick lines the hallways, a set of iron doors still remain and a section of seats in the gym were refinished and re-installed for guests to use. The remodeled Rec Center will host job fairs, basketball tournaments, volleyball leagues, youth and adult classes, wedding receptions, baby showers, family reunions and so much more!
